Is Giving Zakat to My Children Permissible?

No, Zakat cannot be given to your children because it cannot be used as a substitute for responsibility

In Islam, Zakat is an obligation where Muslims donate a portion of their wealth to those in need. However, it is not allowed to give Zakat to immediate family members such as children, parents, grandparents, or spouses.

The primary purpose of Zakat is to help those outside one's immediate family, thus fostering solidarity within the broader Muslim community. Since parents are responsible for the financial well-being of their children, and children for caring for their parents, Zakat is not meant to be used for these obligations.

However, when it comes to stepchildren, the situation is different!

A stepfather is not automatically required to financially support his wife’s children unless he voluntarily takes on that responsibility. If a stepfather has not committed to supporting his stepchildren, they can be considered eligible to receive Zakat, as they do not fall under his direct financial responsibility.

Zakat can be given to other relatives like siblings, uncles, aunts, and cousins if they meet the conditions of eligibility.

And Allah knows best!
