Yes, you can give Zakat to your stepsister if she is poor and eligible to receive it according to Islamic guidelines.
In Islam, giving Zakat to relatives such as siblings, paternal uncles, paternal aunts, or other needy relatives is encouraged. It is both an act of charity and a means of strengthening family bonds.
The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said:
"Giving charity to the poor is an act of kindness, but giving charity to a relative is both kindness and strengthening family bonds."
(Narrated by Imam Ahmad: 15794; al-Nasaa’i: 2582)
This can include your stepsister who is in need. Giving Zakat to her not only fulfills the obligation of charity but also helps maintain family ties.
However, there are exceptions. Zakat cannot be given to parents, grandparents, children, or grandchildren. You are already obligated to support them financially if they are in need and you are capable.
So, as long as your stepsister or other relatives qualify under the Masarif-e-Zakat, it is both permissible and commendable to give Zakat to them.
And Allah knows best!
