Yes, it is permissible to give Zakat to someone capable of working, but it depends on the school of thought.

Islamic scholars have different views on whether Zakat can be given to someone physically able to work but unemployed.

Scholarly Opinions

  1. Hanafi and Maliki Schools
  • Permissible to give Zakat to such individuals if they are struggling financially.
  • Donors are not obligated to give them Zakat if they prefer to help others in greater need.
  1. Shafi’i and Hanbali Schools
  • Not permissible if the person can work but chooses not to.
  • Zakat is meant for those truly in need, and an able-bodied person should seek employment instead.

Exceptions: When Can They Receive Zakat?

  1. Seeking Islamic Knowledge – If studying full-time and unable to work.
  2. Lack of Halal Job Opportunities – If only haram jobs are available.
  3. Respectable Work Not Available – A scholar or professional unable to find dignified work.

Thus, Zakat should go to those who are genuinely in need. If a person refuses work despite opportunities, they do not qualify. However, if they face genuine hardships, exceptions apply.

And Allah knows best!
