Yes, Zakat can be given as food in certain cases.

The general rule is that Zakat should be given in the same form as the wealth on which it is due.

However, if it serves the best interests of the recipient, it is permissible to give Zakat in the form of food. This applies when the person is unable to manage money properly or when food is scarce or overpriced.

  • Zakat is typically given in the same form as the wealth being paid:
    • Cash Zakat should be given in cash.
    • Zakat on livestock should be given to animals.
    • Zakat on crops should be given in produce.
  • However, Zakat on trade goods can be given as the goods themselves or their monetary value.
  • Scholars have differing opinions on whether Zakat can be given in another form.
  • The majority view is that it is not permissible unless there is a valid reason.
  • If Zakat was previously given in another form, there is no sin, but it is recommended to follow the original rule in the future.

When Can Zakat Be Given as Food?

  • If the recipient struggles to manage money wisely due to immaturity, mental incapacity, or carelessness, Zakat may be given in a different form. Some scholars permit providing food or necessities instead.
  • Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyah and Shaykh Ibn Baz stated that giving food instead of cash is allowed when:
    • It prevents misuse of money.
    • Food is scarce or overpriced, making it more beneficial than cash.
  • The Standing Committee for Issuing Fatwas confirmed that during food shortages, Zakat can be used for food. It may also be given when prices are too high for recipients.

While the default rule is to give Zakat in its original form, exceptions exist when giving food is more beneficial to the recipient. If a person cannot manage money properly or food is scarce and overpriced, scholars permit distributing Zakat in the form of food to ensure the needs of the poor are met.

And Allah knows best!
