In Islam, Al-Gharimin refers to individuals burdened with significant debt who lack the means to repay it.

They are among the eight eligible categories (Masarif-e-Zakat) to receive Zakat, as mentioned in the Quran.

The following are the key points about Al-Gharimin:

  • Meaning:
The term Al-Gharimin is the plural of Al-Gharim, which means "debtor" in Arabic. It refers to those who struggle with financial obligations beyond their capacity to repay.
  • Eligibility for Zakat:
Individuals in this category qualify for Zakat assistance if their debts are substantial. These debts prevent them from fulfilling basic needs such as food, shelter, or medical care.
  • Types of Debtors Who Qualify:
    • Those who have taken on debt for essential needs, such as medical expenses, education, or basic survival.
    • Individuals who incurred debts to help others in distress, such as covering another person's medical bills or financial emergencies.
    • Business owners who suffered losses and are unable to recover financially.
    • People who have taken loans due to unforeseen circumstances, like natural disasters or crises, cannot repay them without hardship.
  • Conditions for Receiving Zakat:
    • The debtor must have no means to repay the debt without compromising their basic needs.
    • The debt should not be a result of extravagant spending or unlawful activities.
    • Assistance should be given to directly clear the debt rather than for personal use.

Providing Zakat to Al-Gharimin ensures that those facing financial hardship can rebuild their lives with dignity.

And Allah knows best!
