Is Zakat Due on the Money My Parents Saved for My Wedding?

No, you are not required to pay Zakat on the money your parents saved for your wedding as long as it remains under their ownership.

The responsibility of Zakat lies with your parents for as long as they control the funds.

Here’s a breakdown for a better understanding:

When You Are Not Required to Pay Zakat:

  • The money is still in your parents’ possession.
  • Zakat is due only to wealth that an individual fully owns and controls.
  • Your parents must check if their total assets (including these savings) meet the nisab of Zakat.

When You Must Pay Zakat:

  • If your parents transfer the money to you, make you the owner.
  • If the amount remains in your possession for a full lunar year and meets the Nisab threshold.
  • If you still have the money when Zakat is due, you must pay 2.5% of it.

When Zakat Is Not Required:

  • If you receive the money but spend it before a full lunar year passes.
  • If the total wealth in your possession is below the Nisab threshold.

In short, Zakat is due on the person who owns the money. If it’s still with your parents, they must pay for it. If they have given it to you and it remains in your possession, then you must pay Zakat.

And Allah knows best!
