Yes, Zakat can be donated to a hospital, but only under certain conditions.
Here’s how it works:
Hospitals cannot use Zakat funds to pay the salaries of their staff directly. The primary purpose of Zakat is to support those in need, not to cover operational costs.
Zakat can only be used for patients who meet the eligibility criteria for receiving Zakat, such as those who are financially struggling and unable to afford treatment.
The hospital can only use Zakat on behalf of the patient if the patient permits to utilize the funds for their treatment. Without this consent, the hospital cannot claim the Zakat amount.
Once authorized, the Zakat amount can be used to pay for the patient’s medical expenses. A small portion may also be allocated to the salaries of doctors and staff directly involved in the patient's care. However, this should be minimal and not the primary use of the funds.
Whenever possible, staff salaries and operational expenses should be covered through other sources of funding, not Zakat.
By adhering to these rules, hospitals can ensure that Zakat is used effectively to help those in need without compromising Islamic principles.
And Allah knows best!
