Can Zakat be Paid in Installments to Help a Poor Person?

Yes, but only under certain conditions.

The general rule in all four Islamic schools is to pay Zakat without delay. However, postponement is allowed if there is a valid reason.

Here’s what scholars say about paying Zakat in installments:

  • Zakat should not be delayed unless the payer cannot afford to give the full amount at once.
  • Splitting payments for the recipient’s benefit is discouraged unless the payer faces financial constraints.
  • The Shafi’i and Hanbali schools permit delaying Zakat to help those in greater need, such as close relatives or neighbors.
  • If the recipient might misuse the funds, a structured approach can be taken:
    • The recipient should agree to receive the amount in installments based on their needs.
    • An agent can be appointed to collect the full Zakat amount and then distribute it in installments.

Example:

  • Zaynab owes PKR 150,000 in Zakat to Umar.
  • Instead of giving Umar the amount in small portions (delaying full payment), Zaynab gives the full PKR 150,000 to Faraz, an agent acting on Umar’s behalf.
  • From that moment, Zaynab’s Zakat obligation is fulfilled, and Faraz distributes the funds to Umar as needed.

Another permissible option is to pay Zakat in advance in installments before it becomes due. This allows the payer to give smaller amounts over time while ensuring the full Zakat is paid on time.

And Allah knows best!
