Yes, you must pay Zakat on any income earned from giving driving lessons if it remains in your possession on your Zakat anniversary.

The key principle in determining Zakat eligibility is whether the income remains in your possession on your Zakat due date.

  • No Zakat on the Car: The vehicle itself is a personal asset rather than a business inventory, so it is not subject to Zakat. However, the money earned from conducting lessons is considered part of your overall wealth.
  • Nisab Threshold: If, on your Zakat anniversary, the total amount from your driving lesson earnings meets the Zakat Nisab. You are required to pay 2.5% Zakat on the total amount, including any additional savings.

For instance

If you have been saving a portion of your lesson fees throughout the year. On your Zakat calculation date, if the total savings exceed the Nisab, Zakat must be paid.

If the earnings have already been spent before your Zakat date, you may lack sufficient wealth. Zakat is not required on those earnings if they do not meet the Nisab threshold.

  • Record-Keeping: Maintaining clear financial records of your earnings and savings ensures that you calculate your Zakat correctly and fulfill your obligation accurately.

And Allah knows best!
