No, Zakat does not apply to Bitcoin due to uncertainty, volatility, and potential links to unethical financial activities.

Bitcoin is a relatively new digital asset, its classification as halal or haram is not universally agreed upon. However, many modern scholars lean toward considering it haram, which means Zakat would not apply to it.

Why is Bitcoin Considered Haram?

The following are the reasons Bitcoin is considered Haram in Islam:

  • Uncertain Legitimacy & Origin:
      • The source of Bitcoin is largely unknown, and it lacks regulation.
      • It may involve money laundering, fraud, or deceptive practices, making it questionable in Islamic finance.
  • Highly Volatile & Speculative:
      • Bitcoin's value fluctuates unpredictably.
      • For instance, it started as being worth mere cents, skyrocketed to $35, and later surged beyond $11,000 per Bitcoin.
      • Such extreme volatility makes it a form of high-risk speculation (gharar), which is discouraged in Islam.
  • Lack of Tangibility & Regulation:
      • Unlike traditional currencies, Bitcoin is not backed by any government or central bank.
      • It exists purely in digital form, with no physical certificate or legal guarantee.
      • If a cyberattack occurs, its value can crash instantly, making it an unstable financial asset.
  • Potential for Illicit Use:
      • Bitcoin transactions are anonymous and difficult to trace, making them attractive for illegal activities.
      • It has been linked to drug money, tax evasion, and cybercrimes, raising ethical concerns in Islamic finance.
  • Unclear Classification (Currency or Commodity?):
    • Scholars continue to debate whether Bitcoin is a currency, commodity, or speculative asset.
    • Some countries such as Germany, Japan, and Austria accept it due to economic benefits, but its Islamic status remains uncertain.

Since Zakat applies to halal wealth, and Bitcoin's status is doubtful, most scholars conclude that Zakat does not apply to Bitcoin.

And Allah knows best!
